Where you sleep shapes your trip more than any other booking decision in Istanbul, because moving across the city takes time. Pick the district that matches how you want to spend your evenings.
Sultanahmet — for sightseeing
Walk to almost every major monument, and see them before the day-trippers arrive. The trade-off is a quieter evening and restaurants aimed squarely at visitors.
Galata and Beyoğlu — for eating and going out
Central, lively and packed with restaurants, bars and independent shops. Twenty minutes by tram from the old city and the best base if you want your evenings to have options.
Beşiktaş and Şişli — for value and transport
More local, better value for the standard, and well connected by metro and ferry. A good compromise for longer stays.
Kadıköy and Moda — for living like a resident
Excellent food, real neighbourhood life and lower prices, at the cost of a ferry ride each time you head to the monuments. Best on a second visit or a longer trip.
