The historic heart, where most first trips begin
Sultanahmet holds the monuments most visitors picture when they imagine Istanbul: imperial mosques, a Byzantine cathedral, an Ottoman palace and an underground cistern, all within a walk of each other. Mornings are calm and photogenic, midday is busy, and evenings empty out as day-trippers head back across the Golden Horn.
What to see
Hagia Sophia
A sixth-century cathedral turned mosque, and still the single most striking interior in the city.
Blue Mosque
Famous for its cascade of domes and Iznik tilework. Free to enter outside prayer times, dress modestly.
Topkapi Palace
Ottoman court life across courtyards and pavilions, with Bosphorus views from the terrace.
Basilica Cistern
A cool, columned underground reservoir — a good escape on a hot afternoon.
Getting there
- T1 tram to Sultanahmet or Gülhane, straight from Kabataş or Eminönü.
- About 45–60 minutes by taxi or transfer from Istanbul Airport, traffic depending.
- Walkable from Eminönü ferry pier in roughly 15 minutes, uphill.
